Jonah is one of our Class of 2017 graduating Seniors here at PCS, and we couldn’t be more delighted to share a little more about this exceptional young man and his journey in music and here at PCS.
Jonah has always loved music, from being in Kindermusik as a young child to singing in children’s choir at church to picking out music on the piano from an early age. He started piano lessons with his mom at the age of 5 – just short lessons driven by his interest. He began studying with Dr. Carol Baskins in the fifth grade when it was apparent piano was becoming a serious interest. His love of piano continued to develop through the years. At times he would pursue other interests, but he was always drawn back to his love of music and playing the piano. At the beginning of eleventh grade, Jonah decided to prepare for college auditions because of the possibility of pursuing piano in college.
Jonah has appreciated and benefited greatly from the program at PCS. According to his parents, PCS has provided a very nurturing, loving environment in which Jonah could thrive, from all that the program at PCS provided for him to the excellent instruction he received in his weekly piano lessons. Jonah and his parents have commented on the wonderful exposure to classical music and musicians, piano technique, and music theory which have prepared Jonah for his college auditions. Playing in recitals and competitions while at PCS also helped to give Jonah motivation to continue toward his passion for music.
Jonah believes music is a great form of expression. He also loves being able to play pieces that people in the past composed and shared. According to Jonah, “Being able to play Beethoven’s music is an honor–composing music was his life, and we get to take part in his passions.”
Jonah is setting his sights on a double major in Piano Performance and Digital Media at North Greenville University when he enters college this fall. He has a desire to be a missionary one day and is looking forward to using music as one tool to share his faith with others.
Jonah will be presenting his PCS Senior Piano Recital on April 29, 2017 at 11:00 am in Hamlin Hall at North Greenville University. Congratulations to Jonah and his teacher, Dr. Carol Baskins! We are so proud of you both, and look forward to the great things ahead for you as you continue to develop your musical gifts. We also want to express a very special thank you to Jonah’s parents for their incredible support of Jonah and our program here at PCS over the years.
