Children respond well to routine, even very young ones! One area that routine may be particularly helpful is night time. For parents, bedtime can be a frustrating event as they try to get their baby to go to sleep. Fussing, crying, refusing to go to sleep–all these too often describe bedtime. With the aid of a well-established routine however, baby may begin to better settle into a peaceful slumber at bedtime. How to establish a routine? Kindermusik to the rescue!
Just as with an older child, making sure your infant or toddler has enough activity time to deplete some of their energy before bedtime will make the evening progress much smoother. Run through some of that week’s Kindermusik activities together such as finger plays, dances, and instrumental play. Doing so not only wears your little one out and gets him ready for bed, but it also expands the developmental benefits your child’s receives from class.
The importance of reading to your child cannot be emphasized enough. Not only does it help your child’s language development, but it also builds skills such as listening, logic, and a love of learning. Start from a very early age and read a bedtime story to your child each night. It will help provide more structure to your night time routine, will perfectly bridge activity to climbing in bed, and will serve as a great bonding time between you and your little one. Books from Kindermusik class, either the current one or previous ones are great places to start looking for reading material.
Soft, relaxing music can also make the bed time routine more successful, not to mention more enjoyable for everyone involved! Create a playlist of some of you and your child’s favorite music pieces and have it ready to go at the designated bedtime. Your Kindermusik classes feature a few pieces ideally suited for bedtime. Message relaxes just about anyone and little ones are no different! Take the infant massage techniques used in the beginning of your Kindermusik class and apply those at home before bedtime. Start on your child’s body, moving your hands outward in gentle, heart shaped motions. Moving on, take time to slowly and calming rub your child’s arms, hand, legs, and feet in soft milking-like motions. Some choose to use baby-safe lotions or oils during massage, but that choice is completely up to you.
Routines take some time to establish but can eventually make what was once an arduous task a much more enjoyable one!
