Igor Stravinsky was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1882. Igor was a fortunate child because he was born into a musical family. Stravinsky’s dad was actually a famous opera singer in Russia, so young Stravinsky got to spend a lot of time at the opera house, meeting many famous musicians. In f act, he once caught sight of the famous composer, Tchaikovsky, who we know wrote the famous Nutcracker. (click here to listen again) Stravinsky began taking piano lessons at age 9.
Music wasn’t Igor Stravinsky’s only passion. As he was growing up, he began to enjoy studying law. He ended up going to law school and met the son of composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov who gave Stravinsky composition lessons! This is when Stravinsky found his true passion, and law fell to the wayside after he composed his famous piece, The Firebird.
Stravinsky ended up moving around Europe a lot and in World War II came to the United States. Stravinsky’s music is in the modern period of music and consists of nationalistic music, modern music, opera, and religious music.
