Sergei Prokofiev was born in Ukraine in 1891 to a very talented pianist. His mother loved playing the piano and encouraged him to play as well. In fact, Sergei exhibited talent at a young age and started composing when he was five years old! Because of his musical interest and talent, when Sergei was holder, he and his mother moved to St. Petersburg, Russia so that Sergei could study music at the university there.
Once Prokofiev graduated, he traveled all over Europe to study the different styles and types of music. It was at the time though that World War I had broken out, and Russia went into a state of revolution. Prokofiev found himself having a hard time working in conditions like this in Russia, so he moved to Paris and traveled across the Atlantic and visited the US too.
One of Prokofiev’s musical superpowers was using music to tell a story. In fact, you probably know his most famous one: Peter and the Wolf. In this musical work, Prokofiev tells a story and uses various orchestral instruments to depict different characters of the story.
