Let’s be honest here… most often after the holidays are over, most of us are happy to stay in a wonderful “holiday daze,” and we dread getting back into our normal routines like going back to work, returning to school, or for music students, getting back to practicing. We understand!
But the New Year is also a great time to tweak and settle back into a really good practice routine – practice being the KEY to progress (pun intended)!!
Here are a few of our top tips for getting back into a good routine of consistent practice:
Re-establish your best time of day for practice. For some students, practicing in the morning is ideal. Others do better right after school or in the early evening. Whatever time you like, choose a time that you can stick with most consistently and when your energy and focus is at its best.
Talk with your student about their musical goals for the new year. Maybe it’s a song they want to learn, a skill they want to master, or a music book they want to finish. Share those goals with your music teacher too. We love supporting our students and customizing our teaching to help them reach their goals!
Get out your PCS Assignment Notebook… and keep it out. Keeping your Assignment Notebook handy on your music stand so that you can easily check assignments, fill in practice time, or even make some notes for your teacher means you can really utilize this tool not just to stay focused and on track, but also to stay motivated and accountable.
Get clear on your practice goals and expectations. Do you know how and how much your teacher wants you to practice? If not, please do ask!! The more consistently you practice and the more effectively you practice, the faster you’ll progress. Renew your commitment to practice each day, to stick with it for a set amount of time each day, and to dig into the details of following your teacher’s practice tips and instructions.
Look forward to some of the exciting things coming up at PCS this Spring! We have Composition Month in January, culminating in a Composition Contest in March. And then there are these Practice Punch Cards coming home for our Power Practice Contest starting in January. And of course, getting back into a good practice routine will help you stay on track with the Skillmasters Awards Program and earn some awards at the Spring Recitals.
As always, if you have questions or you are struggling with anything related to your practice time at home throughout the week, reach out to your PCS teacher. We are always very glad to help! Our goal is to keep you inspired, happy, and absolutely loving your lessons here at PCS!
