How do I know exactly what my child is supposed to practice? How do I know that’s the piece(s) they’re supposed to be learning this week?
Those are great questions and here’s the simple answer… Find all of this and more in your child’s PCS Assignment Notebook!
Think of the Assignment Notebook as a three-way communication tool – between teacher and student, between teacher and home, and from home back to the teacher.
Each week there are two things that should be happening in your child’s assignment notebook: the teacher is writing during the lesson to help you know what to do at home, and you are keeping up with marking practice and making any notes of your own during the week to help your teacher know how the practice week at home went for you.
Here are a few other things you can look for in your PCS Assignment Notebook. Each week, your teacher writes assignments, tips of how to practice, and any reminders. Make sure that you take a look at each week’s assignments so you can help your child progress by doing the assignments and putting in the kind of practice how the teacher has asked!
If you have a question about something that was written or if something in the notebook isn’t clear, don’t hesitate to send an email or text to your teacher. It’s better to ask than to not to ask… or to wait to ask. We want your child to practice effectively and consistently so that they maintain steady progress every week.
Your child’s assignment notebook is also a place where you and your child record what happens at home during the week. The most important thing is to record each day’s practice time. And then, any listening, sightreading, performances, or other things that are completed during the week for the PCS Skillmasters Awards Program should also be recorded in the assignment notebook.
When you or your child take time to keep up with the Assignment Notebook each day, it not only helps the student, but it’s a huge help to the teacher in the weekly lesson. Your teacher is able to get a quick “read” on how practice went, to easily record the work completed at home for purposes of the Skillmasters Awards Program documentation, and then to spend as much time focused on working with and teaching the student!
